ESPN is set to embrace the 3D revolution with its latest announcement regarding their plans to unveil the industry’s first 3-D Network. ESPN 3D is set to commence airing 3D programming from June 11 when it will screen the first 2010 FIFA World Cup match between Sourh Africa and Mexico. During the first year, ESPN plans to air at least 85 live sporting events in 3D, although they plan to significantly increase these numbers for the following year.

Other events that will be aired in 3-D include college basketball and football, World Cup matches, the Summer X games and a number of additional events. While some remain skeptical of the acceptance of 3D in consumer’s homes, many analysts believe that the airing of sports programming in 3D can help sway consumer opinion and help ease the transition to 3-D. With the production of high quality 3-D sports programming by ESPN, this certainly seems very plausible.

“ESPN’s commitment to 3-D is a win for fans and our business partners,” Bodenheimer said in a statement. “ESPN 3D marries great content with new technology to enhance the fan’s viewing experience and puts ESPN at the forefront of the next big advance for TV viewing.”

ESPN has been testing ESPN 3D for more than two years, even showing a USC-Ohio State college football game in select theaters and to 6,000 fans at the Galen Center on USC’s campus.

Well, it certainly looks like the industry is going all out in adopting and pushing for a transition to 3-D. While we might be a bit ambivalent when it comes to watching all content in 3-D, you have got to be really excited about the prospects of watching your favourite sporting events in 3D! What do you guys think?
