Great article and I agree with you. Also I have read that creating 3D images is not a expensive as some may think. Its the hardware to view those images that is hurting the market.

Don't forget about videogaming in 3D.

In many households, the TV is spending more time as a monitor to display videogames than watching movies or television.

The new firmware for the Sony Playstation 3 is now 3D compliant, and the PS3 blue-ray drive was just upgraded to play Blu-rays in 3D.

Sony even has a few games out in 3D already, including a major-league baseball simulation game.

Not all cinemas don't have 3d technology. Wilcox Theaters here in Vicksburg ms doesn't have the 3d tech for its digial projectors to show no 3d film live action or animation. I figured that cinemas which can't afford this technology like this one and others are going to be real big losers becouse of the lack of it. Does anyone agree? Well the lack of the 3d tech would force the film going audience here to shift to Jackson metro area where the cinemas there have 3d tech.

Hi Jason, thanks for stopping by to comment. To follow up on the points you raised:

1) I do wear glasses, but when watching Avatar, Up and How to Train Your Dragon in 3D at the theaters, I did not experience any discomfort, and I didn't even really notice it after a few minutes into the movies. Having said that, I do agree that some manufacturers have designed their 3D glasses better than others. Certainly, for those who wear glasses, they should try out the 3d glasses to see if they are comfortable.

2) That is an interesting point and it remains to be seen how much that will affect the adoption of 3D screens. Not everyone is getting one to get wasted while watching the Super Bowl in 3D, but it certainly might have a negative impact on 3D TV sales if it becomes a big issue.

3) That is true, but ultimately, that is a small fraction of the population and isn't something that will single-handedly deter the adoption of 3D TVs. In any case, you can always watch content in 2D if an epileptic person is viewing the screen.

4) This I certainly agree with you on, but there are a couple of things to consider. a) A lot of people are still buying these, because they just want 3D for the family and will use it for home-theater purposes. Having said that, it is certainly prohibitive if you want to have a bunch of friends over to enjoy the latest 3D movie.
b) Polarized displays are already around the corner and will ultimately replace active shutter technology once the cost of production starts dropping. Passive polarized glasses are dirt cheap and will do away with this cost issue.

5) True, but then again that is true of most shiny new gadgets that kids will interact with. Additionally, as noted above, passive glasses will take care of that issue.

6) 3D Porn is actually a VERY valid point. It wasn't made as a juvenile attempt at cheap humor. While you and I may not purchase a 3D-TV for the sake of 3D porn, you are seriously underestimating the demand that 3D porn can generate for 3D TVs. The adult film industry would not be a multi-billion dollar industry if it weren't for the public's appetite for their content, and a lot of adult movie production houses have been quick to embrace 3D. Time will tell if this actually factors into the equation, but it would be very naive to discount it altogether.

Whilst it seems apparent that there is a massive push for 3D TV this like technologies before it make a success.

Back to a reality check - with some realistic points:

(1) They say it's just like wearing glasses and millions of people do that. Sure, but how many people wear 2 pairs of glasses at the same time. Have you tried it - it's annoying and uncomfortable.

(2) The latest health rules say that you should not watch 3D whilst drinking.

(3) Epilepsy sufferers cannot watch 3D TV for obvious reasons.

(4) The cost of 3D glasses - having friends over has never been so expensive. It is unrealistic to spend so much money to cater for everyone. Just how many glasses do you need depends on how large your circle of friends are.

(5) Natural breakage from curious fingers. The kids playing with the shiny 3D glasses and now they are broken.

3D porn is not a reason for success, just a cryout for a real girlfriend who is in 3D.
